Welcome to the digital civics blog

The single most difficult venture in exploring digital civics, has been explaining, when asked, what it means.

“It’s basically about everything” I usually say, “because in the digital age, everything about our lives is impacted by digital technology, and it makes us see things in a different way.”

That’s a lot to take in.

But digital civics IS about everything. It’s about your kids using their phones at the dinner table, it’s about that tweet that got somebody fired, it’s about that company bombardingyou with advertising tailored specifically to you… its even about how you feel when it seems the world is changing so fast that you can’t get your feet to grip the ground.

This discipline explores everything that happens in the world, and in your life, because of the digital age. The way new technology shapes us, and our lives; and the way that we behave and treat one another differently because of that.

But at the same time, digital civics also explores how things in our world haven’t changed all that much. How for thousands of years we have struggled with innovation and new scientific discovery; how we have always adapted every time a new way of communicating comes along.

And when we look to the future, to all the potential opportunities that our new technologies might bring as we shape our world, or what sorts of challenges we might face if we are not careful with our technology, these are all aspects of digital civics too.

So, digital civics is a discipline that explores all the areas of our lives and looks for answers about how to live as citizens of the digital age. It explores knowledge that can help us improve our lives, feel safer, and have confidence in our future. And it considers how we can protect ourselves and those we love from what appears to be a constantly shifting world.

This is a place you can come to get the latest science, find robust answers to questions, and explore new ideas that can help you make sense of the world.

This blog will explore topics as diverse as philosophy, engineering, ancient history, physics, international politics, computer science, psychology, in fact, as unlimited a list of topics as there are ramifications on our lives, in a quest to formulate answers to our everyday digital age challenges.
